Talaiots and possessions

Talaiots

date from the first millennium B.C. and are megalithic structures formed out of large stone blocks that were used as watch and defence towers for island inhabitants.

Sant Llorenç municipality has more than 75 relics of these structures and old cave dwellings that have been declared a cultural heritage site.

Possessions

For centuries, these large country estates were the economic heart of the island when its strength lay in farming production. They were the centres of agriculture, employment and social relations, with estates housing ses cases - the main house - in the centre with stables for animals, accommodation for workers, granaries, stores, bodegas and houses for the owners - the senyors.

Other outstanding posessions include: Son Vives, Son Sureda, Sa Punta, Calicant, Ténjer, Sa Real, Llucamar, Balàfia or Son Berga.

These estates were then sold off in small plots where small country houses were built in the traditional Majorcan country style. The present-day inland area in the municipality developed in this way.
